Project Summary

Across all their brands, the group is committed to excellence and innovation. Their commitment to innovation opened an opportunity to trial Kelda’s Air-Powered showers in the Hilton London Kensington Hotel. At the heart of the coveted Holland Park district, the hotel is 10 minutes from Westfield London shopping centre. It is also just blocks from Shepherd's Bush Underground station, linking to central London, and Kensington Palace and Gardens are two miles away. With 601 guest rooms, and London being expected to face severe water stress by 2030, Kelda’s water efficient shower technology offers the site the chance to significantly reduce its water consumption.

Process

Kelda’s Deluxe Shower Panel with eHandset, featuring Air-Powered technology, was chosen for the trial site due to its easy retro-fit installation.

Air-Powered technology is drawn from cutting-edge aerospace and automotive engineering, using the principles of fuel injection technology. Each shower features an intelligent microprocessor and powerful digital fan which controls the delivery of water and air to the showerhead. Within the showerhead, water is injected into a high-velocity air stream where it is broken up into 100s of droplets that are 2.5X the size of a standard shower. Larger droplets yield larger momenta providing the sensation of more spray force, making less water feel like so much more.Data collected has shown that users claim that Kelda showers are as good as, or better than, standard showers whilst using 50% less water, with 91% of women and 73% of men claiming so.Air-Powered showers represent the future of sustainable showering. By injecting water into air, it marks the beginning of a new era of clean technology and unrivalled experience.

Data

Kelda Shower Monitoring And Recording Technology (KSMART) is a low-cost solution for remotely monitoring showers, allowing businesses to measure, monitor and manage their water consumption. Using KSMART and information supplied by the Hilton Kensington, the following data was collated: Average water usage per shower with the existing shower: 41.73 litresAverage water usage per shower with the air-powered shower: 27.99 litresAverage Water saved per shower with the Air-Powered system: 13.74 litresAverage showers per day per room: 1.28

Results

If Kelda’s Air-Powered shower were rolled out in all of the site’s 601 guest rooms, the Hilton London Kensington could save approximately 10,546.45 litres of water per day or 3,849,450.25 litres a year.Based on current costs taken from www.gov.uk, this water reduction could save them an estimated £21,826.36 from their annual utility costs.Furthermore, by replacing 601 conventional mixer showers with Kelda’s Air-Powered showers could reduce the Hilton Kensington’s carbon footprint, emitting an estimated 30,062.79 fewer kg of CO2.
